Yam Kola Urundai / Senai Kola Urundai



For the alphabet Y it is Yam kola Urundai or Senaikola urundai . This kola urundai is an addictive snack which forms an integral part of the chettinad cuisine. The kola urundai’s can be prepared with other vegetables like beetroot, vazhaikai and podalangai.
INGREDIENTS

Grated yam
1/ cup
Fresh grated coconut
1/ cup
Pottukadalai/Fried gram dal
1/2 cup
Red chillies
4
Fennel seeds
 2tsp
Salt
To taste
Onion
1
Oil
For deep frying

PREPARATION
Grate the yam. Saute it on medium flame till all the moisture is removed. Keep it aside to cool completely

Chop the onion finely
Now transfer the sautéed yam to a mixer jar. Add friegram, red chillies and coconut to it.

 Add salt and grind it into a coarse paste. You do not need to add water.
Now add the finely chopped onion

Now mix everything well and pinch small balls of this. Make all the balls an keep aside

Now heat sufficient quantity of oil in a kadai/pan
When it is moderately hot add few balls and fry in medium flame
Flip over till it browns uniformly

Remove the fried balls and place them on a absorbent paper to drain the excess oil

Serve warm
